Figure 6.2 shows a variety of ideas for intermittent celebrations of success. These lists are by no means comprehensive or complete. For additional ideas, talk to colleagues, read other books, and—the best idea of all—ask your students. You can also find additional ideas for reinforcement in the categories of activities, adult attention, peer attention, and items in Appendix B: List of Reinforcers.

Level of Support and Intermittent Celebrations of Success

For students requiring lower levels of support (i.e. a class with few risk factors), you can probably maintain motivation primarily with noncontingent attention and positive feedback. If you wish, you can use intermittent celebrations for variety, for a sense of change, or just to infuse a bit of fun into your class—but do so sparingly. With a medium‐support classroom, occasional celebrations can be used as a way to keep students striving to be successful and to keep things interesting and exciting. If your students have many risk factors and need a high‐support management plan, it will probably be essential for you to use intermittent rewards regularly, along with noncontingent attention and positive feedback (Barbetta et al., 2005).
